Lord Playboy v. Cambochica

August 29, 2006

The general conversation over at Khmer440 is seldom worthy of comment. A year’s worth of intimidation, harassment and death threats against a female blogger, however, goes far beyond the forum’s typical, mind-numbingly dull sex-tourist banter. That cops and lawyers are now getting involved seems more than appropriate.

That the humbly named Khmer440 moderator (who gives a version of events here) has started removing offending content from the Khmer440 web site is likely indicative of the legal situation in which he currently finds himself. But it’s probably too late to start feigning ignorance now.

Nor is his situation likely to get any better. In fact, it could get much, much worse. Along with Cambodia’s tiny expat blogosphere, all the commotion has apparently sparked the interest of local women’s groups, who are finding the overt sexual content of the Khmer440 web site just a wee bit disconcerting, perhaps even criminal.

But credit where credit is due. The whole affair really has demonstrated a fairly superhuman display of daftness on the part of Lord Playboy. By all tellings, the guy tried to pick a fight with a online stranger, and when the stranger dismissed his advances, he worked himself up into such a spittle-flecked rage that he now finds himself in intensive care due to self-inflicted wounds, with no one to blame for his troubles but himself.

I’d recommend aspiring webloggers attach a copyright notice or Creative Commons licence to their blog, to discourage this sort of
    identity theft.

  2. jom Says:

is the sour love triangle between you, angie, and derren about plagiarism or something else?

  3. jom Says:

i think angie used vso to pay for her research for a story to write in cambodia and crazy derren was a perfect research subject and perfect character for her story. angie couldn’t cut it in rural cambodia and crazy derren gave her an excellent excuse to bail out of her obligation with vso. who’s using who? both used cambodia and the ngo(vso) to advance their careers without lifting a finger to help the cambodians.

that’s my story and i’m writing it.

  4. jom Says:

    sorry, forgot something.

darren, aka lord playboy, pb, litotes, pea brain Englishman, racist, jew hater, loser who couldn’t make it in the English speaking country, the blowk who always criticizes ngos and everyone who is working for a ngo, is himself also using ngo and Cambodia to advance his own career without doing much.

Darren, you thought a lonely lesbian in Cambodia was easy, didn’t you?

That is an American radical feminist lesbian to you, dude. You sure got taught a good lesson real good.

  5. Angie Manzanoq Says:

    “Jom,”

You don’t know me or anything about the work I did in Cambodia.

    Angie

  6. Jinja Says:

Khmer440 has just deleted the username ‘Litotes’ (that had signed its posts as ‘Cambochica’) and changed it to ‘Guest’. The index of ‘Litotes’ posts remains (for now) on Google at: http://tinyurl.com/mpmhl

  7. Angie Manzano Says:

    Peter,

You are right, there is a lot more to this matter, like the “another.com” account registered to “Litotes” that was set up with the email addresses of “peter@khmer440.com” “playboy@440.com”. Apparently whoever “peter@khmer440.com” is knew about the identity theft.

As far as the death threats–yes, it is hard to believe. If I didn’t have the saved copies of the threats and impersonation attempts I wouldn’t have believed it myself.

  8. Angie Manzano Says:

Yes, I have proof of the “another.com” impersonation, which will be sent though proper channels. (If you seriously don’t know what I’m talking about, you need to talk to Darren about it. He has the email address of peter@khmer440.com on the account page, registered to “cambochica@another.com”)

As far as evidence of threats, follow the links from this article and you will find a few.

    Peace,
    Angie

  9. Jinja Says:

“As you may also be aware, comments quoted on an open internet forum do not constitute ‘identity theft’ and are not the legal responsibility of the owners or moderators.”

Yet Khmer440 is taking great care to edit/delete posts using the name Angie Manzano/Cambochica.

If mentioning a person’s given name on the internet is bad form, someone forgot to tell your forum manager. Angie’s name was utilized repeatedly, including a public poll about burning her at the stake.

I really don’t see anything in your comments that addresses the fundamental points (harassment and threats) in the post above by DAS.

  10. Jinja Says:

I know my internet law well enough, thank you. That’s why Khmer440 is in a frenzy of deletion and revision.

    A few clarifications:

“440 is the second biggest English language site in Alexa’s listings”
Not true. Perhaps it’s true for regional Cambodia sites. But site visits are not a measure of credibility, anyway.

    “cannot police the forum”
For a period of several months? Imagine if someone started posting as ‘Hun Sen’. You might want to get additional help. You are a private site, not Usenet.

“You on the other hand have published grossly defamatory comments”
Which comments? If stating the obvious is a crime, you’d better investigate ‘Details are Sketchy’ and Blogher.org as well. The list is growing.

“we just ignore him in much the same way as a tiger would ignore a sqeaking little mouse”
“I would except to find myself in a Khmer court” [sic]

I’m finding this a waste of time: your posts aren’t consistent, or even grammatically correct.

I’d suggest you actually read the original post by DAS, and click on the links to Khmer440 forum and ezine. You’ll probably be deleting those soon as well.

Boy oh boy, I leave Cambodia for three weeks and all hell breaks loose on the Cambodian ex-pat blogosphere.

What a bunch of time-wasting, petty sniping bullshit – from ALL parties (including me now – I don’t know how I drag myslef into these things). As though anybody really cares.

Just for kicks I’m gonna post some arty nude shots on my site soon in a blatant attempt to generate more traffic and massive amounts of pseudo-controversy.

Can’t we all just get along? If you don’t like the content on Khmer400 then don’t visit that site. Me? I think some of it is juvenile crap and some of it is great thoughtful stuff. Same goes for Jinja and all the rest. My site sucks, expcet for the photography, great links and my well known open-mindedness.

As a practicing Buddhist I can tell you that one key to enlightment is to lighten up. For crying out loud. I never saw such a big stinky steamy heap of verbal pooh in all my life (and I’m older than all you blogguys and bloghers!

And while we’re at it, what the hell does gender have to do with blogging anyhow. We’re all just people, right? Except for you-know-who. Hah!

Am I a sex-pat? Am I a republican? Am I right-wing? My own personal experience is that labels don’t adhere well. If it makes you happy to be angry, then OK, I’ll be your patsy right-wing sex-pat bad grammar gestapo goon villain. Fuck me! Villify me. Punish me with impunity. Beat me, bite, me, burn me… make me write bad checks!

    Get a life everybody.

By the way, I’m not the Gavin above.

  13. Nunya Bizness Says:

Then I guess that was her identical twin at the VSO conference in August.

  14. Deke Says:

Know most of those in question. The Khmer440 crew is well known for its lies, deletion of posts (after being called out on them), and use of abuse. I know who I would support in this case. Unfortunately, this episode is another in a long string of similar incidents. Eventually it will catch up on them. I am sure that many throughout Cambodia (who have had the misfortune to run into them) will be celebrating when they finally do fall foul of the wrong person or persons.

  15. Deke Says:

Glad you kept my post up. Noticed someone tried to post as me in an effort to discredit me. I stand by my original posts. One day these guys will slip up and it can’t come soon enough.

  16. John Vink Says:

They also practice copyright infringement… The picture under their post ‘Trouble at T’Rumour Mill’ is used without my knowledge or permission, and the copyright mention is not indicated.

  17. John Vink Says:

Correction: they added the copyright line after I complained about its absence.
