Scam alert

September 10, 2007

In a rather unorthodox bit of marketing, Cambodia’s E-Visa web site points to a Wikipedia scam alert on the perils of Cambodia’s border crossings.

Beware of scams when entering Cambodia overland. Most common is the inflation of the visa fee from the official US$20 to 1000 baht (US$30+) or more. To avoid this, get your visa in advance - either from a Cambodian embassy/consulate (via an agency if necessary) or from the e-Visa website. See the Visas section for full details.

Past scams have included fines for not presenting a vaccination certification (even though this is not mandatory), charging 50 baht for a (bogus) SARS health form, and enforcing an imaginary US$100 to Cambodian riel exchange requirement (at lousy rates).

Don’t get scammed by corrupt immigration cops, buy your visa online! Talk about truth in advertising. Score one for the good guys.

I buy my visa on-line but the immigration cops at Moc Bai make me pay some rummy posing as a doctor money for a “vaccination certificate” that is not required.

What good is paying an extra $5 for an e-visa if it leaves you open for an additional shake-down of $5 ast the border? That means I pay an extra $10 for a visa. Not a good value.
