Reach for the sky

October 17, 2009

With large swaths of his population suffocating under the weight of massive poverty, Prime Minister Hun Sen last week appealed to the kindness of donor countries.

Ahead of a meeting about the provision of development aid for Cambodia, the head of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, warned donor countries not to link conditions with development aid for Cambodia.

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen considers the linking of conditions with aid as being under more pressure than during the presence of Vietnamese experts in Cambodia after the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979.

… [Hun Sen] warned that the government will not accept, or even stop receiving foreign aid, if aid is linked with conditions.

To get the full effect, donors were asked to put their hands above their heads, too.

  1. I appreciate to see reactions and discussions started to my “mirroring” what the Khmer press reports.

Hardly beggars when no-string attached “aid” is available from China. You think USAID is altruistic? In terms of geo-politics if there are beggars it’s the US.

No strings attached aid from china means:

You take the money and do anything you want so long as you praise our name as loud as you can.
When we want a vote in the UN ex againt taiwan you better toe the line.
When we want land to plant rubber etc for our internal consumption , you better fork over the land and at a very advantageous price.
When we want natural resources and minerals for our industies, hand them over.
When your country is depleted of natural resources and our factories plollute your land and people, remember we gave you hundreds of millions of dollars with no strings attached.
I prefer western aid than chinese aid for cambodia.

China’s “geopolitical” interests in the region have always been calculated regardless and independent of whatever political situation exists. Although, with that said, a defunct superpower once sponsored a thin ribbon of land with a vulnerable western border, called Vietnam.
